World Water Day 2008
"The world water crisis is one of the largest public health issues of our time. Nearly 1.1 billion people (roughly 20% of the world’s population) lack access to safe drinking water1. The lack of clean, safe drinking water is estimated to kill almost 4,500 children per day2. In fact, out of the 2.2 million unsafe drinking water deaths in 2004, 90% were children under the age of five3. Water is essential to the treatment of diseases, something especially critical for children.
This problem isn’t confined to a particular region of the world. A third of the Earth’s population lives in “water stressed” countries and that number is expected to rise dramatically over the next two decades4. The crisis is worst in developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
The world water crisis is created by a confluence of factors including climate and geography, lack of water systems and infrastructure, and inadequate sanitation, something that 2.6 billion people (40% of the world’s population) lack access to5. Some of these countries have additional problems, including high levels of arsenic and fluoride in drinking water6.
Many women and young girls in rural areas in Sub-Saharan African and other parts of the world must trek as much as six miles everyday to retrieve water for their families7. Due to this manual labor, such women and children are prevented from pursuing an education, maintaining their households or earning additional income8.
Thus, the lack of clean water, coupled with the lack of basic sanitation and a dearth of hygiene education, is one of the largest obstacles to progress and development in these regions and across the world. The UN has prioritized water access among its Millennium Development Goals because it contributes to such widespread suffering, including increased poverty, high child mortality rates, depressed education levels, and political instability. Without question, the world water crisis condemns billions of people to a perpetual struggle to survive at the subsistence level,9 thus inspiring millions to engage and alleviate this problem."

The Silver Bullet
Here I go again, read a part in a book that I thought I should share in the Blog World. And here it goes:
The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys
"Knowledge is power, but most importantly, knowledge saves us time. I realized that from that day forward I would be spared hours and hours of waiting by the phone, hours and hours of obsessing with my girlfriends, hours and hours of just hoping his mixed messages meant "I'm in love with you and want to be with you". It's hard. We're taught that in life, we should try to look on the bright side, to be optimistic. Not in this case. In this case, look on the dark side. Assume rejection first. Assume you're the rule, not the exception. It's intoxicatingly liberating. But we also know it's not an easy concept. Because this is what we do: we go out with someone, we get excited about them, and they do something that mildly disappoints us. Then they keep doing a lot more things that disappoint us. Then we go into hyper-excuse mode for weeks or possibly months, because the last thing we want to think is that this great man that we are so excited about is in the process of turning into a creep. We try to come up with some explanation, no matter how ridiculous, than the one explanation that's the truth: He's just not that into me."
All of this while I'm watching Wedding Crashers, myspace-ing it, google-ing tattoo designs, thinking of Vegas on March 28th for Spring Break with my favorite people, and being SICK. You know, for some reason I was in this mode of hoping to meet a dude with swagger that's interested. And, for some reason, I've been hoping some dudes that I've met were that dude. But, of course, they weren't. Good guys, I would have to say... just not into me. Harsh thought, but it's a harsh thought that girls never want to consider. I've been around my guy friends to understand that if a guy were to not be interested to just let it go. And, I've been around my guy friends to understand that they don't exactly say "hey look, i'm just not into you" to the girls they've met. They just don't keep in contact with the girl and not give a f&^% after. They'll stay acquaintances, but that's where it stops there. It's that guy mentality that doesn't care or at least acts like they don't care and they do but they just don't show it. WHICH, I believe, is the easiest defense mechanism. Now, I'm not here to write about how sad I am or kawawa my face is because I'm not. I'm just giving a little insight. After reading this part of the book, I thought it was pretty true about how girls look into some situations with prospective love interests. Ladies, we need to stop being soft and hoping that love could miraculously appear in dudes that we hope would fall for us as much as we believe we're falling for them. I've heard many guys say 'fuck bitches, get money' and I believe the same saying should be said by us, too. What can I say?

Allan Cohen
On my way back home from Seattle in January of this year, I had mad time to kill in the airport. I stopped in at Borders (genius idea, by the way, to have a bookstore in the airport). I kept looking around for books and since the majority of the time that I was in Seattle, the topic of dating and relationships arose quite frequently. I found the book Don't Get Lucky, Get SMART: Why your love life sucks and what you can do about it by Allan Cohen. I don't want to come off as needing a self-help book but I did find it interesting on what it had in store. I read a few chapters and decided to buy it. Before I boarded my flight, I read more than half of the book already. There goes my money, but I guess that's a good thing that it was a book I couldn't stop reading. Anyways, I barely cracked it open again and in a chapter it said:
-Don't curse the jerks for wasting your time. Instead, bless them for motivating you to move ahead.
-You don't need to quit dating or relationships because you had a bad experience. Use the experience to finetune and eliminate the parts that didn't work so that you'll be ready for the next time around.
-Make a "Required" and "Preferred" list and stick to it.
-Every dating experience falls into two categories: 1) to be enjoyed 2)to be learned from.
-Make space for someone who can meet you with a whole heart.
I'm sure the things he writes in this book are things that we know, but for those who don't know, you SHOULD know. I'm just glad there was actually someone who wrote a book about it. Check it out if you're bored at Borders or Barnes & Noble. And, if you see Fonzworth Bentley's book anywhere, please direct me to it.
